Welcome to the first issue of Clovie's Newsletter: The Little Loop.

This one took me a few hours: real research, a full do-over halfway through, and a hard rule that nothing made the list unless I'd actually take my own kids.

Speaking of me: I was born and raised in Potomac, then spent 12 years living and working in NYC. I met my husband there, had a baby, and we moved back to Maryland when my son was six weeks old. Cramming all of that (new city, a newborn, the suburbs, a new house, a new job) into such a short stretch has changed me in ways I'm still figuring out. It's also what sparked Clovie, an all-in-one place to find and book kids activities.

I tell you that because this list started as a generic "10 Things To Do in MoCo to Celebrate the Fourth!" I finished it, read it back, and... it felt so inauthentic. It's going to be 100 degrees. We will be staying INDOORS (my 3-year old also doesn't know about fireworks yet). The only way this business works is if I'm sending you recs I actually believe in.

So here's the real list: 10 INDOOR Kids Activities This Weekend in MoCo!

Here we go.

Just Show Up (open all weekend)

​1. Play Street Museum (Kentlands)
​Ages 1-8 · $18/child · Reservation suggested (sessions cap) · Socks required, no food​
A pretend-play city scaled to toddler height: a cafe, a doctor's office, a fire truck, the works. The reservation system is what makes it worth it, since sessions are capped and it never becomes the sweaty 11am free-for-all other play places turn into. Book ahead, because spots are filling up fast this week, most preschools and childcare are closed for the holiday and everyone's scrambling. I'm already booked for Friday morning. Socks required, no food. Located in the Kentlands, ages 1 to 8, $18 a child for drop-ins.

​2. HyperKidz (Rockville)
​Babies to big kids · From ~$13 · Walk-in, no reservation · Open 7 days · Socks required​
The big one. Four stories of climbing structure, a separate zone for the 2-to-7 set, and a padded corner for babies who aren't ready for the chaos. This is where you go when the entire goal is a hard nap by 2pm. It's loud and enormous, and on a 98-degree day that's the whole point. Open play seven days a week, walk in anytime.

​3. District DabbleLab (Bethesda)
​Toddlers and up · Pay per project · Walk-in drop-in · No cleanup​
When you can't face another ball pit, this is the antidote. Their Make + Take is real drop-in: walk in, pick a project off the menu, they hand you every material, and the part that matters, you don't clean up. Soft lighting, calm room, actual art. It's over in Westbard Square, and it's as much for you as the kid.

​4. The Little Towns (North Bethesda)
​Ages 0-8 · Open Fri-Sun · Reservation suggested (capacity capped)​
A 16-building, toddler-scale town: grocery store, vet, post office, a tiny diner, and your kid runs all of it. Smaller and more boutique than Play Street, which is the point. Capacity's capped, so you reserve ahead and walk into a calm room instead of a mob. Open slots available this Friday through Sunday, ages 0 to 8. On Wyaconda Rd in the Pike District.

​5. We Rock the Spectrum (Gaithersburg)
​All ages, sensory-first · Open play Fri/Sat/Sun · Grip socks + online waiver​
Built sensory-first, designed for kids on the spectrum but genuinely open to everyone, which in practice makes it the calmest, best-run play gym around. Seated zip line, sensory swings, a crafts corner, and an actual quiet room for when it all gets to be too much, for them or you. They've got open-play slots Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this weekend, so it's an easy one to drop into. Grip socks required, sign the waiver online. On Airpark Drive.

​6. Pete the Cat: A Live Rock Musical at Imagination Stage (Bethesda)
​Ages 4+ (lap pass for littler: free under 1, $5 ages 1-2) · Thu July 2, 10:30 AM · Tickets from ~$15 · Tickets required​
Bethesda's professional kids' theater stages this like a tiny rock concert: Pete, the unbothered blue cat from the books, helps an anxious, over-organized second-grader loosen up, with a VW bus, a detour to Paris, and a lot of songs. It's a real air-conditioned theater, so it's a proper sit-down break from the heat. Thursday, July 2 at 10:30 AM. Best for ages 4 and up, and littler ones are welcome on a lap pass (free under 1, $5 for ages 1 to 2). 4908 Auburn Ave.

​7. Ocean Tales at Kids Play Gallery (Gaithersburg)
​Ages 1.5-6 (caregiver stays) · Fri July 3, 10-10:45 AM · $40 (includes play) · Registration required, few spots left​
Little Origins runs a 45-minute ocean-themed story-and-art session: real interactive storytime, a process-art project, a sensory invitation, and then the kids get turned loose on the open-play gallery afterward. Ages 1.5 to 6, a grownup stays. It's $40 and includes the play admission, and when I looked there were only a handful of spots left, so don't sit on it. ​8. Sleeping Beauty: The Time Traveler at Adventure Theatre (Glen Echo)
​Better for older littles (strobe + loud sound) · Fri July 3, 7 PM or Sun July 5, 11 AM · Tickets required​
Another real sit-down, air-conditioned break. Adventure Theatre puts on professional shows for little kids in an intimate theater at Glen Echo. This one's a time-travel twist on Sleeping Beauty: a boy gets whisked back to the Age of Charlemagne and teams up with a knighthood-dreaming princess to outrun a curse. Friday, July 3 at 7 PM or Sunday, July 5 at 11 AM. One heads-up: there's strobe lighting and loud sound effects, so it's better for slightly older littles than babies. 7300 MacArthur Blvd.

Two More Cool-Downs

​9. Cabin John Ice Rink (Rockville)
​All ages · Fri Parent and Tot Skate, AM ($5 adult+tot, skates included) + Sat public skate, PM · Pre-register; check holiday hours · Dress warm​
The literal coldest room in the county. There's a Parent and Tot Skate on Friday late morning where one adult and one little one get on the ice for $5, skate rentals included, plus a public session Saturday afternoon. Wear layers and light gloves, it's cold in there, which this week is entirely the point. Pre-register for the weekend sessions, and double-check the holiday-day times.

​10. Library Discovery Rooms (Gaithersburg, Germantown, Quince Orchard, Burtonsville)
​Ages newborn-8 · Free · Sunday only this weekend (closed Fri-Sat) · Reserve online, 1 hour per family​
The free, A/C, "in-the-know" pick, and your Sunday move this weekend. Several library branches have a Discovery Room: a private little play room of toys, puzzles, and books for newborns through age 8 that you book by the hour for your family alone, so you're not sharing a ball pit with thirty other kids. It's free, it's air-conditioned, and you reserve a slot online ahead of time. Heads-up for the holiday weekend: the branches are closed Friday and Saturday for the Fourth, so Sunday's your window.
